about

This song was written in 2009 as a challenge. A good friend of mine Terry “TC” Crumpley posted a drawing his then-17-year-old daughter Heather did of an elfin character on a music forum we both frequent. The drawing was amazing; showing a sharp eye for detail, a great sense of movement, and a wonderful sense of proportion and imagination. I was very taken by her work, and asked TC if Heather could draw Tinkerbell for my daughter Abby; who is obsessed with her. I wanted Heather’s version, not simply a rendering of the Disney Tink. A couple of days later, this magnificent picture appeared. I was floored. I asked TC what I could do for her in return. He consulted with her, and her response was “Art for art; write me a song.” So, I did. While I was at it, I wanted to use my “Swannanoa mojo” to write a little bit out of my idiom. I did it as folky as I could, and it’s the only song I’ve ever written or arranged that is 100% guaranteed keyboard-free. You Pat Metheny fans will recognize his influence in this song.
