about

This song was written in late 1984, for perhaps the noblest of reasons; I was showing off for a girl. I was having lunch with a young lady (Laurie Ann Lewis of Cicero, yes, that was you), and we were talking about songwriting. She didn’t believe that you could write a song just sitting there with staff paper, so I took out a sheet and wrote what I was feeling (one of the HUGE advantages of perfect pitch is that I can write in my head, and fully arrange). I finished the tune while we were still at the table, I told her that the band was rehearsing that night, and I’d record it. I had the guys (“The Guys” referring to the band I was in at the time, called Sgt. Friday) sight-read the tune at rehearsal, and I presented her with it at the next opportunity. It was dashing, romantic, unusual, and entirely unsuccessful. Oh, well, I was punching out of my weight class anyway… :)

But, I think it’s a well-written tune; and the source of one of my most touching memories; we played that tune live out a lot, and once, we played it as a dinner set ending piece. After the song ended, a woman came to the stage, in tears. She shook my hand and told me it was the most beautiful song she’d ever heard. One of the few times in my life I’ve been rendered speechless.
